The Beer Advent Calendar, Day 1: Trillium Black Mettle

Last year (back in precedented times...) 5 friends and I decided to build Beer Advent Calendars.  Each one of us was assigned 4 days to provide beer for, to buy enough beer for the whole group and to wrap\label the beers.  The way the math works out, everyone puts in 24 beers, and gets a box back with 24 different beers (with 20 being a surprise).  It was a good time, and the beers were great, so we decided to do it again this year.  All six guys wanted back in, we arranged a socially distant box building and now we get down to the drinking of the beers.

I don't think there is a chance in hell that I'm going to post about the beers 24 days in a row, but it seems like a fun way to crank out some blog content and ignore the tirefire that is 2020.  With that being said, I give you Day 1: Trillium Black Mettle (4.03/92/99) brought to us by @OKinDC.

As you can see from the BASH line, this Beer Advent Calendar is not fucking around.  My liver quaked a little bit just from opening the Day #1 can, which by the way is the coolest can I've ever seen.  Black Mettle clocks in at 8.4% and is the rare Black IPA found on shelves these days.  This is a massively kicked up version of 21st Amendment's Back in Black or Port City's Long Black Veil.  This beer manages to be exponentially roasty, hoppy and bitter all at the same time.  Drinking is like going to a rock concert only to leave with a blaring headache but knowing you had a damn good time.  I gave it a 3.75 on Untappd which is slightly lower than average, but that's likely a me not loving the style problem as opposed to anything actually wrong with the beer.  It likely should have earned an extra .25 just for setting a badass tone for Beer Advent:)

I'll be back tomorrow night the quick review of Beer #2!
